How to use this printable squares sheet

  1. Pick a game or type your teams. Choosing a real game fills in both teams, their colors, the kickoff time and where to watch. For anything else, type any two names, or leave them blank and write them in.
  2. Choose how the numbers work. Leave them blank to draw them after the board fills, or pre-fill them with a random set.
  3. Print it or save it as a PDF. It fits on one page, landscape or portrait, on letter or A4 paper. A PDF is easy to text to the group or print later.
  4. Fill in names at the party. Everyone writes their name in a square until all 100 are taken.

How to run a paper squares board

A printed board works the same way as any football squares game. There are 100 squares, one team runs across the top and the other runs down the side, and each square becomes a pair of digits once the numbers are drawn.

1. Fill the squares

Pass the sheet around or tape it to the wall and let everyone write their name in the squares they want. A person can take more than one square. Try to fill all 100 before you draw numbers, so every combination belongs to someone.

2. Draw the numbers

Write the digits 0 through 9 on ten slips of paper, put them in a hat, and draw them one at a time. Write each one in the next box across the top. Then put the slips back and draw again for the side. Drawing after the board is full keeps it fair, because nobody knew which numbers they would get.

3. Check the score after each period

At the end of each quarter (or half, or period), take the last digit of each team's score. Find that number across the top for the top team and down the side for the side team. Whoever's name is in that square wins the period. A 17 to 14 score, for example, points to 7 on one side and 4 on the other.

4. Agree on the rules before kickoff

Settle the small questions up front: whether overtime counts toward the final score, and what happens if a winning square is empty. Our How to Play guide covers the common choices, and our overtime guide explains how extra time is usually handled.

Printable or online?

Paper is hard to beat when everyone is in the same room. Online is better when your group is spread out, or when you would rather not do the math at halftime. With a free online board, players claim squares from their phones, the numbers are drawn with one tap, live scores update on their own, and every winner is highlighted automatically. The QR code on the printed sheet sets up the same game online, so you can use both.

Printable squares FAQ

Is this printable squares sheet really free?

Yes. Make and print as many sheets as you like. There is nothing to sign up for, and nothing you type is saved on our servers.

Can I print a blank squares template?

Yes. Leave the team names blank and keep the numbers blank. You get a clean 10 by 10 board with write-in spaces for the teams, the numbers and each period's winner.

How do I assign the numbers?

Most groups draw them from a hat after every square is taken: one draw of 0 through 9 for the top, and another for the side. If you would rather skip that step, choose pre-filled numbers and the sheet prints with a random set already in place.

Does it work for basketball and hockey?

Yes. Pick an NBA, college basketball or NHL game, or choose the sport yourself, and the sheet lists the right scoring periods for that sport.

Can I make a printable baby squares sheet?

Yes. Choose Baby & Other, then pick a format such as birth date and time. The sheet labels both sides for you and explains how the winning square is found when the baby arrives. The same tab has a blank board for any other event.

Can I print it from my phone?

Yes. Tap Print or Save as PDF, then choose a printer or save the PDF from your phone's print screen. The sheet fits on one page in portrait or landscape.

What does the QR code do?

Scanning it opens our free online version with the same game ready to set up, so anyone at the party can run the board on their phone with live scores. You can turn the QR code off before printing.
