What Are NHL Squares?

NHL squares (or hockey squares) adapt the classic football squares format for hockey. A 10x10 grid creates 100 squares, each representing a unique combination of score digits. Winners are determined by the last digit of each team's score at the end of each period. The game requires zero hockey knowledge to enjoy.

Hockey's low-scoring nature makes it unique among squares games. With typical scores in the 2-4 range per team, certain number combinations appear more frequently. This creates exciting moments when a late goal completely changes the winning square. For a full explanation of the rules, visit our How to Play page.

💡
Hockey squares are different

Hockey has three periods instead of four quarters, and scores are much lower. This means numbers like 0, 1, 2, and 3 are much more common, making those squares more valuable. Unlike football squares where 0, 3, and 7 dominate, hockey has its own scoring personality.

NHL Squares FAQ

What are the best numbers for hockey squares?

With hockey's low scores, 0, 1, 2, and 3 are the most common final digits. Unlike football where 0, 7, and 3 dominate, higher numbers like 7, 8, and 9 rarely win in hockey squares.

How many winners are there?

Standard format has 3 winners, one after each period. With overtime mode, you can have a 4th winner if the game goes to OT or a shootout.

How do shootouts work?

Shootout goals count toward the final score in our system. If a game goes to shootout, the winning team's final digit includes the shootout-winning goal.

Can I run squares for a playoff series?

Absolutely. Create a new game for each playoff game, or use the same grid across the whole series. Visit our NHL Playoffs Squares page for more on postseason play.

Do I need to know hockey to play?

Not at all. Squares are 100% luck based. Numbers are assigned randomly, and winners are determined by the score. Read our guide on squares for non-sports fans to see why everyone can enjoy it.

Is this really free?

Yes, completely free. No premium tiers, no limits on games, no hidden fees.
